The Sky Dragon of Osiris (also known as Slifer the Sky Dragon) is one of the God cards made by Pegasus J. Crawford, who is the in-story creator of "Duel Monsters". After defeating Marik Ishtar in a duel, Yugi Mutou becomes the owner of the God card.

Pegasus J. Crawford's creationEdit

According to the Super Expert Rules, in order to play "The Sky Dragon of Osiris", the player has to sacrifice 3 monsters on the field. Once summoned, Osiris' ATK and DEF becomes the number of cards on the player's hand x 1000. It is unaffected by traps and it can only be affected by spells for a turn.[1] Cards and abilities trying to snatch control of "The Sky Dragon of Osiris" on the field will have no effect on the God card.[2]

In addition to a normal attack, "The Sky Dragon of Osiris" also have the ability to counter an opponent's summon and attack the summoned monster by using its "Second Mouth".[3][4] The God can attack this way as many times in one turn as long as the opponent summons a monster.[4] The monsters that receive the attack have their ATK or DEF, corresponding to their current battle position, reduced by 2000, and those that have their ATK or DEF decreased to zero automatically die.[5][6] The opponent player will not receive damage if his/her monster is destroyed by this kind of attack from Osiris.

The True Sky Dragon of OsirisEdit

Since Pegasus feared the God cards' extreme powers, he unconsciously weakened the ones whose powers he could translate from the stone slab (Ra, due to the Hieratic Text, was not affected). While the ATK and DEF remain the number of cards in the player's hand x1000, Osiris' special effects undergo some changes:

  • When the opponent summons a monster, Osiris instantly attacks and weakens it by 2000. In the case the monster's power reaches 0 or under, it is destroyed with no damage to the opponent's Life Points;
  • If Osiris is Special Summoned, it goes to the Graveyard during the End Phase. The player may discard one card to activate its Second Mouth on one monster in the opponent's field;
  • When the player has no cards in hand (meaning that Osiris' ATK and DEF are at 0), paying 1000 Life Points will activate Osiris' ultimate ability: combining the two mouths to deal 2000 damage to every monster in the opponent's field, while dealing damage to the opponent's Life Points.

During the beginnings of the Duel Monsters, Pegasus created the card replicas of three great beasts engraved on a mysterious lithograph containing the accounts of a Shadow Game between a nameless Pharaoh and his rival. "The Sky Dragon of Osiris" is one of great beasts. Legend has it that the one who controls the three great beasts will have the power to rule the world and become the King of Duelists. However, Pegasus soon learned about the dangerous powers that has became present within the cards. He tried to destroy them, but he could not do it. With the help of the Egyptian Government, he sealed the cards away separately in The Valley of Kings in Egypt.

Battle CityEdit

In their slumber, Marik Ishtar's "Ghouls" stole the God cards, including "The Sky Dragon of Osiris". In order to defeat the nameless Pharaoh, Marik challenged Yugi Mutou through Strings and summoned Osiris. Despite creating a "God Five" combo which made Osiris impossible to destroy, Strings was defeated by a Deck Out by Yugi, who gained Osiris through the ante rule.

Yugi didn't put Osiris in his deck until the quarter-finals against Yami Bakura. He summoned Osiris on the very last turn of the Duel, right before Bakura's strategy could defeat him. Rishid, posing as Marik, tried to make Yugi hesitate so that his opponent's strategy would get completed, but Yami Bakura decided to lose in order to protect his host.

In the semi-finals against Kaiba, Yugi managed to summon Osiris before his rival could summon Obelisk, but the two gods knocked each other out, causing the light of chaos to appear, which showed Kaiba and Yami Yugi a vision of Ancient Egypt.

In the finals against Yami Marik, Yugi summoned Osiris and tried to attack his enemy, only for the latter to summon Ra's ultimate form, the "Egyptian God Phoenix", which nullified Osiris' 6,000 ATK with ease. The Phoenix subsequently destroyed Osiris, sending it to the Graveyard. Later in the Duel, Yami Yugi summoned Osiris through "Monster Reborn" to shield Obelisk from the Phoenix's attack. By winning against Marik, Yugi won the last God card and became the owner of the three great beasts. After the Battle City, Yugi used the three God cards, including "The Sky Dragon of Osiris", to unlock the nameless Pharaoh's memories in the Millennium World.

Memory WorldEdit

During the Shadow RPG between Yami Bakura and Yami Yugi, the latter summoned Osiris to pursue Thief King Bakura. While the Sky Dragon dealt some damage to Bakura's Diabound, it was powerless against the opponents' ability to merge with darkness. The Pharaoh used the God to lure Diabound out of the darkness, but to no avail. By defeating Osiris, Diabound gained the Sky God's abilities: Summon Lightning Shot and Thunder Force.

When Yugi and his friends made the Pharaoh rediscover his name, Atem, the three Gods were swiftly summoned to merge into Horakty, the Creator God of Light, which defeated Zorc Necrophades and ended the Shadow RPG.

Ceremonial BattleEdit

"The Sky Dragon of Osiris" was among the two God cards Atem used in his final Duel against Yugi. By putting it into the Graveyard at the start of the Duel, Atem planned to Special Summon it when Yugi was to deliver the final blow, so that he would turn the game around. However, Yugi had predicted that Atem would use "Monster Reborn" and used "Gold Sarcophagus" to make that card unusable. Thus, Osiris didn't revive and Atem was unable to shield himself from Yugi's final attack.

After Atem departed to the afterlife, the God cards and the Millennium items were lost in the cave-in of the temple where the Ceremonial Battle was held.

  1. "Traps" doesn't necessarily mean "Trap Cards" and "spells" doesn't mean "Spell Cards".
  2. Cards that let an opponent sacrifice one of the other player's cards also have no effect on Osiris once on the field.
  3. Osiris cannot use this ability if it cannot attack or if the opponent's monsters are protected.
  4. 4.0 4.1 Attacks from this special ability are not counted as normal attacks. Osiris can still perform its normal attack after using this ability. Through this ability, Osiris also have the initiative to attack first regardless of who's turn it is.
  5. This kind of attack from Osiris is counted as "magic" or "spell". If a summoned God card is attacked by Osiris' "Second Mouth" and survives, its ATK or DEF will only be reduce for one turn, and returns to normal in the next turn.
  6. Ra's Egyptian God Phoenix is unaffected by this kind of attack from Osiris.
